Oral Cancer Screening

Three Canadians die every day from oral cancer

Traditionally, oral cancer has been linked to risk factors such as tobacco use and chronic alcohol consumption. However, a new risk factor called human papillomavirus (HPV) 16 is now changing the face of oral cancer.

According to a study conducted by Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, HPV 16, a common sexually transmitted virus is associated with oral cancers located in the upper throat and back of the tongue.

Recent studies show that it may play a role in more than 25% of oral cancer cases. Since few people even know they have a HPV infection often that it may lead to oral cancer, your dentist recommends including ViziLite Plus with TBlue as part of your annual checkup.

Your dentist recommends annual ViziLite Plus with TBlue exams

ViziLite Plus with TBlue helps your dental professional identify and mark abnormal oral lesions including precancerous cells and cancer that may be missed by a standard visual exam

When oral cancer is found, early treatment is less invasive and outcomes far better

Annual Oral Cancer Screening Exams are Important

When oral cancer is found early, treatment can be successful 82% of the time. Unfortunately, the survival rate of oral cancer has not improved greatly over the last 30 years because oral cancer is usually caught in later stages (stage 3 and 4).

Early detection is a key to survival so it is important to see your dentist regularly. An annual screening exam called ViziLite Plus with TBlue, used in conjunction with a routine head and neck examination performed by your dental professional, can help to find abnormalities that could lead to cancer. That's the kind of screening that could help save lives.

Are you at Risk?

These risk factors may increase a person's chance of developing oral cancer:

Tobacco (all forms of tobacco smoking and chewing, including smokeless cigarettes)

Alcohol abuse

Human papillomavirus (HPV) 16 infection (this is a common sexually transmitted virus)

Marijuana use

Previous history of oral cancer or precancerous lesions

Age 40+

Family history of oral cancer

However, 25 percent of all oral cancer victims have no risk factors.

How Does ViziLite Plus with TBlue Work?

The ViziLite Plus with TBlue oral cancer screening system is a painless exam that your dental professional can perform in just a couple minutes. ViziLite Plus with TBlue uses a handheld light source that helps to improve the examiner's ability to identify abnormalities that may have been missed under normal lighting. Your dental professional will conduct the exam as follows:

1. Your dental professional will conduct a standard oral cancer screening looking for any abnormalities.

2. You will rinse with a solution that will prepare your mouth for the Vizilite Plus with TBlue part of the examination.

3. Your dental professional will examine your mouth using the handheld light source.

4. If a suspicious lesion is detected, your dental professional may want to monitor it for a few weeks or mark it with TBlue (a blue dye). Your dental professional will then document the findings.

What Will My Dentist See?

Most of the time your dental professional will conduct a thorough oral cancer screening examination that includes ViziLite Plus with TBlue and will see that everything looks completely normal.

However, there may be times when your dental professional identifies something that looks abnormal. At that point, your dental professional will use their expertise and may ask you to come back in a few weeks to follow up or may refer you to an oral surgeon for a biopsy.

Below are some examples of how ViziLite Plus with TBlue helps your dentist identify and mark abnormal lesions. The ViziLite Plus with TBlue identified lesions are marked in blue:

Epidermal hyperplasia with mild dysplasia

Squamous cell carcinoma under the tongue
